Parents As Teachers (PAT) is a curriculum of child development information for parents of young children, prenatal to kindergarten. Certified parent educators visit families in the home providing information for parents and sharing age appropriate activities, toys, and books with parent and child. Parenting issues are discussed, as well as the child's development and early literacy skills. Children receive developmental screenings, and referrals are made if a child shows delays. The early years are critical to a child's success in school and in life. The PAT program offers information and support so that parents can be their child's best, first teacher.

PAT is a nationally recognized program and has been active in Erie County for thirteen years. At the present time, the program is funded primarily by Help Me Grow for ages prenatal to three years; for children at risk for developmental delay; or with delays. The Erie Huron Counties Community Action Commission is our fiscal agent as of this program year. Vermillion Schools also funds a PAT program for its residents. Parents As Teachers staff includes a Coordinator/Parent Educator, and five Parent Educators (all part-time).
